Can't get Yamaha PCY 155 3 zone ride to work properly

Postby DruminMD » Thu Aug 23, 2012 8:42 pm

I'm new to building my first DIY kit. So far so good but I am having a problem getting my ride to configure properly.

I have followed these steps recommended by Dmitri but I still have no edge sound triggering Superior Drummer 2.0.

Here are the steps:
In the Head/Bow channel set 'DualHead' to Yes.
In the Head/Bow channel set 'Note' to a note desired for the Bow zone.
In the Rim/Edge channel set 'Type' to Switch.
In the Rim/Edge channel set 'Note' to a note desired for the Edge zone.
In the Rim/Edge channel set 'BNote' to a note desired for the Bell zone.
Repeat all above steps for all connected Yamaha style 3 zone cymbals.
In the menu navigate to 'Set All EdgeSw', press Up to change from No to Yes and then press Right. It then will show 'Working'. Now hit a few times edge zones of all connected piezo/switch and piezo/switch/switch (Yamaha style) pads/cymbals. When done, press any button to finish.
In the menu navigate to 'Set All BellSw', press Up to change from No to Yes and then press Right. It then will show 'Working'. Now hit a few times bell zones of all connected Yamaha style 3 zone cymbals. When done, press any button to finish.

Here are my settings showing how everything is set up with the correct notes for "Ride", "Bell", and "Edge" in Superior Drummer:

16:40:50.329 From Port 1 Note Off 10 D#2 0
16:40:50.329 From Port 2 Note Off 10 D#2 0

Why am I not getting the B2 to trigger?

I can worry about fine tuning the settings later and figure out choke, but for now why won't the edge ring -- I don't have 3 zones.

Thanks for any help.

OK. I made some progress. I loaded an .mds file that I found online awhile ago from forum member Talrusher and it got all 3 of my zones to work. So that's good. But now it feels like the edge is too sensitive and rings while playing the bow. And the bell is a little too hard to make ring.

Here are my settings where they are right now:

Can anyone suggest a few tweaks to help me dial this in. Again I'm new to this. I've read everything I can but I just would like a little guidance from some experts to get up and running quickly. I probably shouldn't have started with the ride since it requires 3 zones and quite a bit of nuance but that's where I started -- oh well.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Lower Threshold on the Edge one notch at a time until Edge doesn't ring when you hit bow.

And the bell is a little too hard to make ring.

Is it the bow or the edge ringing when you hit the bell?
If it is the bow then it is a mechanical thing - the switch in the bell just doesn't make contact when you hit it lightly - it is a common thing for both Yamaha and Roland 3way cymbals that bell triggering requires quite hard hits.
If it is the edge then raise Threshold on the 3rd zone one notch at a time until you get reliable bell ringing.
