Uncheck 'Use same In/Out' and set In and Out ports individually.
Uncheck 'Enable MIDI Through'.
Try again.

I tried it (both Megadrum USB and USBMIDI2) and got the same error.

Thanks!

Error trying to open the MIDI port suggests that something else already opened and uses the port.

Can you help me figure out how to locate a conflict? I have been searching on MIDI port conflicts and everything I find seems to be device-specific (not MD).

Also, since I used other buttons in the build, I decided to try just hooking up a LEFT button to the MD to try to pull up the bootloader. So I took one of the buttons you sent to me and connected it to pins 3 and 4 on the MD per the diagram. I tested the button first and it gave .2ohm when pressed and open circuit when not. I held it pressed and turned on MD. The copyright and VU screens came up. Any idea why this simple arrangement would not pull up the bootloader? This should work even if MDM can't see the MD, right?

Thanks!

I'd suggest you to test it on another PC with no MIDI software installed but MDM.

1. Connect all buttons.
2. Make sure you can navigated left and right. If you cannot navigate left then look for wiring error. There is no many choices of what can go wrong with buttons - they either make or they don't make.

I tried it on an older Netbook and it looked like it would work but then I got only SysEx Timeouts. Went back to my main laptop. This time it worked! I have no idea what changed but I will snapshot my Task Manager in case it stops.

Since it looks like MDM is working, I will defer the button troubleshooting until/if I need to.
Now I'm going on to the next phase of doing all of the settings in MDM.

Dmitri, thanks for all of your guidance. Happy New Year!
