Bug?

Postby Mookie » Thu Apr 29, 2010 9:05 am

Hello everyone

Finally I have my system up and running.
DIY A2E converted, everything is running fine!
I just have this wired problem and I think it is some bug/problem with
Megadrum.
My Megadrum is connected via USB to my computer (Quad CPU, 4GB RAM,
Windows XP SP3, M-Audio Profire610 sound card)
On my computer I run Cubase and Superior Drummer 2.
My computer is very well configured for been a digital audio workstation
and I have plenty of free resources so the computer is not overloaded.

The bug(?):
Sometimes when I play on my drums the megadrum "stuck"
What I mean by stuck: The computer stop getting midi signals from the
megadrum, even though on the megadrum LCD everything is looking fine, I
can see the hits and leds are working, however the computer is not
getting any midi notes, during this time the computer is not stuck at
all and keep working fine, this halt is going on for a few seconds and
then suddenly it gets "released" - I hear a cymbal sound and then
everything is running fine again.
This happen at random times and I can not reproduce it.
But I am 100% positive that it is something to do with Megadrum maybe it
can't keep up with all the pads I connected? I think that it happened
only when I played fast on all the drums, but I am not sure.

My drums are:
6 dual trigger pads (snare and toms)
1 one zone pad (kick)
6 one zone cymbal (crashes/splashes etc)
1 dual zone ride
1 optical hihat controller

Anyone has an idea what may cause this? or had such a problem?

Thanks!
Mookie

Try to use MIDI out connector instead of USB and see what will happen.

What's your build? Full DIY? Dmitri's? Synthex's? More information please. :)

I bought a 32 inputs Megadrum directly from Dmitri.
Running latest firmware (megadrum644_20_32_20100402)
On my pads I have 27mm piezos with 50k potentiometers with solar screen mesh, diy cones using poron, on my cymbals (a2e converted) I have 15mm piezos with 30k ohm resistors
Any more information needed?

I haven't heard about such an issue. Anybody else?
Can it be still a problem with the PC configuration?
Can you try with another PC?

Based on the description I guess we can rule out the 'Lost USB signal' problem here.

To me this sounds more like some MIDI interconnection/buffer/sync problem in Cubase. I myself experienced very unpleasant timing issues with MIDI in Nuendo, could this be a more complicated variant?

Tell you what, try running MegaDrum with SD2.0 in standalone mode, see if this issue pops up. Of course, you need Toontrack Solo in order to do this.

I am using Cubase Essential 4 with M-audio Profire 610.
My buffer is set to 128, with buffer above that I can feel slight latency when I am drumming.
It indeed could be something to do with Cubase, I will try it with Toontrack solo.
If it will work with Toontrack Solo, what should I do to fix it so it will work with Cubase? (for multi channel live recording)

So its not a cable problem?
I just bought midi and midi to usb cables.

That's a good question. I myself still cannot understand why these problems exist.

Probably not. However, one can never be sure.

I'm not sure if this has anything to do with it, but does it work on other computers? Just so that we can rule out something wrong with your MegaDrum. :)

I don't have another computer to make test..
I switched usb cable to new one, no change.
I didn't try midi cables yet
But I can confirm that when it gets stuck - also microphones and guitars that are recording on the same time on audio channels are getting stuck too
But I don't know if megadrum is the source or not
