Latency problem

Postby raul » Mon Sep 30, 2013 6:19 pm

Hello everyone
my problem is this: I have a MD32 ch connected to the PC, and use the software Reaper with VST Addictive drum, and I use a sound card M-Audio fasttrack pro connected via USB, but I can not reduce latency in an acceptable manner,
if I connect MD to the Alesis D4 via midi, latency is practically zero,
I believe that USB and midi of MD to have the same data rate (in fact USB much faster ), and the USB cable is 30cm in length.

The question is: what requirements must have the PC for having the minimal response between software and usb connection?

thanks to all

Do you use an ASIO driver for the soundcard? It reduces the latency dramatically.

Hello chrishopf,
thanks for the reply.

I have also used the asio4all drivir, for M-Audio Fasttrak pro, configured to obtain the lowest latency, but the latency is reduced little, is not acceptable, when I play the drum the delay is very annoying.
My PC is thus formed:
processor: Atalon (tm) II x2 250, 3.2Ghz,2GB Ram
Op. system: Win xp 2002 professional SP3
the software is intall 32bit.

I think that everything is critical (computer / software)
I should have a faster computer?
I read in various posts but have not found the answer, what do you think?

many thanks.

I'm sure it's not an MD problem. I think there are settings in AD and reaper you may need to adjust.

Make a screenshot of the software configuration where it shows that it uses ASIO2 drivers.

Asio4all is always the second best(Rubbish in my opinion)

Download the latest drivers for your FastTrack Pro device from Avid. (this is dated 20-06-2013)

Anders, I see that FastTrack Pro device is £300. What's the advantage? I'm in the process of building a new system and I'm a bit lost on this area.

Hi best friend!

I don't know if i would have bought a Fast Track Pro today...the card is rather old...and has gone end of life at most stores. I bought my fast track ultra 8r...for about € 220 ..second hand. Rack mounted, 24 bit/96khz, 8x balanced outputs...a nice DSP which is freeing up the computers cpu...but the design is rather old...i think you can find even better cards today.

The fine thing with Avid/M-audio modules is their driver policy. There are drivers available for W8/Mac for most legacy sound cards.

Anders, I looked at this and the Behringer FCA1616 but I see people reporting 17ms latency! Do the asio4all drivers work on any sound card/OS?
thanks in advance.

I have not seen or tested the FCA1616...the specs look good...and the corperation with Midas makes Behringer shine a bit extra. (a friend of mine arranged a concert with a famous Swedish band...we looked at their rider before the gig...the only thing it included was: No Behringer! This was some years ago...)

The 17ms rumors depends totally on how they tested the card...64 bit ASIO drivers,OS(W8 will cut a lot of latency)...FireWire/USB?

ASIO4ALL will work on any PC based soundcard...but trust me...you won't get happy. But for test purposes...no problem.

I have written some articles about latency on my site...zourman.com...there is a subpage for this....
