cross talk - help with suggested settings please

Postby DruminMD » Wed Oct 03, 2012 12:04 pm

I've finished building my AtoE mesh head kit complete with built-in trimpots/voltage dividers and everything is overall great. Nice dynamics, etc. But I'm having trouble with separating the heads from the rim triggers on the toms.

Specifically I'm working on my 10" rack tom right now and as a single trigger the head is awesome. But I want the rim trigger to be a cowbell sound and I've played around with the settings but I'm having a lot of issues with the rim triggering the head and vice versa.

Can anyone please share, or recommend a good starting point for the settings that will allow me to accomplish my goal of using the tom mainly as a mounted rack tom, but with a decent whack on the rim I'd like a cowbell that won't also ring the tom head?

Thanks so much.

What are the settings for the Head and the Rim on this pad?

Hi Dmitri,

It was pretty messed up after all of my tweaking so I pretty much reloaded the defaults. Here's where I'm at now:

Channel:10
Function: Normal
Curve: Log2
Compression, Level Shift, XTalk Level, XTalk Group: 0
Threshold: 40
Gain:2
HighLevel 443
Retrigger Mask: 1
DynLevel: 0
DynTime: 8
Minscan: 40
Type: Single Piezo

Tom1R
Notes: 56
Function: Normal
Curve: Log1
Compression, Level Shift, XTalk Level, XTalk Group: 0
Threshold: 50
Gain: 8
HighLevel: 413
Retrigger Mask: 4
DynLevel: 12
DynLevel: 24
MinScan: 40

If it's a dual zone pad, why do you set Type to Single?

I tried it all different ways and had no luck. So I read this in the manual:

"If set to No, Head/Bow and Rim/Edge inputs are treated as separate pads"

Since that's kind of what I want -- the head to be a Tom and the Rim to be a cowbell that seemed separate to me.

I did try it the other way too, but like I said it was pretty messed up no matter what I tried with each triggering the other, etc.

Can you suggest some settings to get me started? I've thoroughly read the manual and tried the suggested settings for mesh pads but I can't seem to keep the two "zones" separated.

Thanks.

Both triggers are on the same pad and by physical design are NOT separate. You must set DualHead to Yes on the Head and the Type to Piezo on the Rim. You must also adjust DualMidPoint for best balance between the Head and the Rim triggering.

OK. I'll do that again..

But when I did that before and moved Dual Midpoint even just a little away towards the middle of the slider I ended up having the cowbell triggering from a hit on the drum head.

Are there other settings in combination that you'd recommend that might be a better starting point for me versus just trying everything kind of shotgun?

Thanks.

You must have HighLevel configured correctly on both the Head and the Rim before doing anything with the DualMidPoint.

I believe it is configured correctly. That's the first thing I did after installing my voltage divider/pot. I set HighLevel auto to on and set the level to 64. Then I smacked the drum pretty hard about 10 times to get the high reading and then turned off the auto level. I repeated this for the rim trigger and I ended up with the settings that I posted above.

Should I have done something different?
