Trying to get dual pads to work

Postby reppaz » Sat May 03, 2014 2:21 pm

Hi,
I've spent a couple of days now trying to figure out MD and MDM. I'm experiencing some random behavior that I need to sort out before daring to use MD in a live situation.
I have two newly shipped 32-channel units and both have similar problems. I have four dual Roland PD-8 pads, to be expanded to 12 if all goes well (it's a weird project I know). I just want the head and rim of the pads to output separate notes. The attached image shows how each input is configured (only note numbers differ). Anyway, here are my experiences from the first MD unit. The second unit shows similar issues. I just have one pad connected at any time, moving that pad around to each separate input:

First setup of everything (with "live updates" active):
Snare Only 3rd zone is triggered, head and rim triggers the same note
Ride Only 3rd zone is triggered, head and rim triggers the same note
Crash Only 3rd zone is triggered, head and rim triggers the same note
Tom1 Only 3rd zone is triggered, head and rim triggers the same note
Tom2 Only 3rd zone is triggered, head and rim triggers the same note
Tom3 Only 3rd zone is triggered, head and rim triggers the same note
Tom4 Only 3rd zone is triggered, head and rim triggers the same note
Aux1 ok
Aux2 ok
Aux3 ok
Aux4 ok
Aux5 Only 3rd zone is triggered, head and rim triggers the same note
Aux6 Only 3rd zone is triggered, head and rim triggers the same note
Aux7 ok
---------------------------
After save to slot 1:
Snare ok
Ride ok
Crash ok
Tom1 ok
Tom2 ok
Tom3 head ok, rim triggers at max velocity + generates a head trigger too
Tom4 ok
Aux1 ok
Aux2 ok
Aux3 ok
Aux4 head and rim triggers the same note, sometimes choke on+off triggered as well
Aux5 ok
Aux6 head ok, rim triggers at max velocity + generates a head trigger too
Aux7 head ok, rim triggers at max velocity + generates a head trigger too
---------------------------
After save to slot 1 again:
Snare ok
Ride ok
Crash ok
Tom1 ok
Tom2 ok
Tom3 ok
Tom4 ok
Aux1 ok
Aux2 ok
Aux3 ok
Aux4 head and rim triggers the same note, sometimes choke on+off triggered as well
Aux5 ok
Aux6 head ok, rim triggers at max velocity + generates a head trigger too
Aux7 ok
---------------------------
Close MGM, shutdown of MD, start MD, start MGM (then "Get All"):
Snare ok
Ride ok
Crash ok
Tom1 ok
Tom2 ok
Tom3 ok
Tom4 ok
Aux1 ok
Aux2 head ok, rim triggers at max velocity + generates a head trigger too
Aux3 head ok, rim triggers at max velocity + generates a head trigger too
Aux4 ok
Aux5 ok
Aux6 head ok, rim triggers at max velocity + generates a head trigger too
Aux7 head ok, rim triggers at max velocity + generates a head trigger too
---------------------------
"Send all", close MGM, shutdown of MD, start MD, start MGM (then "Get All"):
Snare ok
Ride ok
Crash ok
Tom1 ok
Tom2 ok
Tom3 ok
Tom4 ok
Aux1 ok
Aux2 ok
Aux3 head ok, rim triggers at max velocity + generates a head trigger too
Aux4 head and rim triggers the same note, sometimes choke on+off triggered as well

Aux7 head ok, rim triggers at max velocity + generates a head trigger too

1. You have not attached an image with your config.
2. Start with just two (head and rim) particular inputs. Show config for the pad on these inputs. Describe a problem you're having with the pad and this config.

Thanks airflamesred, not sure why my picture link didn't work.

My config is as in the picture from airflamesred, but I've tried lots of different settings (maybe not the right ones :) )
The problem is that a few of the inputs behave differently from the other ones, and it's not the same inputs from time to time. But maybe my specific settings are causing this behavior?
Just let me know what I need to provide here, I'll do my best to provide it. :)
Thanks so far.

You're Welcome, and welcome btw
All the channels are the same so set note to 0 if you have nothing plugged in. Tick the high level and set that up (200 seems low to me) Increase the thresholds for the time being and drop that re trigger from 100.

Thanks :)

I tried to change the values that you pointed out. However neither the retrigger nor the high level settings seems to affect the different response on the different channels. If it was just one or two channels that always behaved differently, I could just avoid those. But now when this issue moves to different inputs from time to time I need to find the root cause (hopefully the root cause is me, then I can adjust it ;) ).

I'd still suggest you to follow my advice, i.e.:
2. Start with just two (head and rim) particular inputs. Show config for the pad on these inputs. Describe a problem you're having with the pad and this config.

When making changes in MDM, make sure you either send settings to MegaDrum after making changes or make sure 'Live updates' is enabled.
If you don't have anything connected to other inputs, disable them for now by setting their Notes to 0.

Let's see if I can attach an image properly this time.

Here's an input that troubles me right now, aux6. The head works fine, but the rim generates both head and rim signals. In the attached image, I've hit the head four times and then the rim four times (the choke on/off in the beginning seems to appear when I switch inputs with my pad so ignore those). In this case for this input the same behavior was experienced when rebooting the MD.

Sorry, yes those won't help atm but will need changing. As Dmitri sais plug in one pad and disable the other channels.

If working with MDM I always make sure I 'send all' after any alterations.

I'll apply that rule as well from now on to "send all" after any changes. Let's see what dmitri says about my previous post. And thanks again for putting time into this. :)
