Best Way to find Roland Cymbals Settings and MDM Crashes

Postby FreeTheDrums » Sun Jan 11, 2015 2:02 pm

Hello Megadrummers,

maybe anybody can help me about questions related to Roland Cymbals CY-R15 and CY 12R/C.
There are many conflicting statements in the forum.
What is actual (with newest Firmware) the best way to configure the settings for the Roland Cymbals?
The Questions:
1. What is the actual best way to configure the settings for a Roland 2 way Cymbal?
2. What is the actual best way to configure the settings for a Roland 3 way Cymbal?
3. Can I use the CY-R15 only as 2 way (Bow/Bell)?
4. When do I need to set the all EdgeSw or BellSw?
5. EdgeSw or BellSw are not in the MDM, that’s right?
6. Do I need the settings Pad Type “3 way Roland” for a two way using of a Roland 3 way Cymbal (i.e. CY15R)?

My experiences to use only Bow and Bell of a Roland Cymbal:
- Connect CY-15R (Bow/Bell) to MD –Ride Input.
- Use Piezo(Dual or 3way Yamaha)/Switch Settings
- Try many threshold settings ….
- I find no settings to separate Bow and Bell Sounds successful.

The other problem are the many frustrating crashes of MDM.
It try the MD – PC connection
- via USB HUB,
- on USB 2.0,
- on USB 3.0,
- other PCs
Never, I get a stable using of MDM. Manny freezing events of the MDM.
Sometimes need a full upload (all settings to MD) 60 seconds, sometimes the same settings only 20 seconds?

Thank you for your efforts.

As any other dual piezo/switch pad/cymbal.

2. What is the actual best way to configure the settings for a Roland 3 way Cymbal?

Did you look into viewtopic.php?f=3&t=1968?

3. Can I use the CY-R15 only as 2 way (Bow/Bell)?

Yes, of course.

4. When do I need to set the all EdgeSw or BellSw?

Only in initial setup to find out rough Thresholds for switch inputs.

5. EdgeSw or BellSw are not in the MDM, that’s right?

Not yet.

6. Do I need the settings Pad Type “3 way Roland” for a two way using of a Roland 3 way Cymbal (i.e. CY15R)?

If you connect only one jack (bow/bell) then you set Type to 'Dual or 3way Yamaha'.

My experiences to use only Bow and Bell of a Roland Cymbal:
- Connect CY-15R (Bow/Bell) to MD –Ride Input.
- Use Piezo(Dual or 3way Yamaha)/Switch Settings
- Try many threshold settings ….

You cannot set Thresholds to "many". There must be a specific Threshold (and Gain) setting that you come up with.
Describe your steps how you came up to these specific settings and what the problem is.

The other problem are the many frustrating crashes of MDM.
It try the MD – PC connection
- via USB HUB,
- on USB 2.0,
- on USB 3.0,
- other PCs

Please describe the steps for me to reproduce crashes/freezes/delays and I will try to fix them.

Ok, I will try to describe the Problem.
I Use MD Firmware and MDM: 20141203

1. Test with:
- CY15-R Bow/Edge
- CY12R/C Bow/Edge

Set All EdgeSW: -> I get a new Rim/Edge Threshold .
Ok that’s worked

2. Test with:
- CY15-R Bow/Bell
- CY12R/C Bow/ Bell

Set All BowSW: -> I get a new BThreshold in the 3. Zone.
No Bell Event!
Now put I this value in the Rim/Edge Threshold .
Now it’s worked.  Crazy?
I can change the BThreshold to all Values. No difference!
Maybe because I have not understood something!

Is there any chance to improve the sensitivity of the Bells?
At the CY12 starts the Velocity at 90 and at the CY15 first at 110!
Below comes only the Bow Events.
It needs heavy hits!

Thanks for your help.

Best Regards Peter

3rd zone settings are only applicable to dual piezo/piezo pads or 3way Yamaha style 3 zone cymbals. As per "Usuful posts/links for configuring MegaDrum->Suggested steps for configuring zones separation of a Roland style 3way cymbal" with 3way Roland cymbals, switch inputs (both bow and edge) are configured only on Rim/Edge. Also in http://www.megadrum.info/content/pads-settings it says about 'DualHead for Head/Bow input':
...
If set to 3Way, Head/Bow and Rim/Edge inputs are treated as Bow and Bell inputs of 3way pads, e.g. 3way Roland style cymbals, and the next Rim/Edge input is treated as an edge input of the same pad.

In short, you should leave BThreshold at zero for 3way Roland cymbals.

Switches on switch inputs, like bow and edge inputs, are either On or Off. If, for example, you hit the Bow and the bow switch doesn't make, there is no way for MegaDrum to detect that the Bow was hit. Bow switches of both Roland and Yamaha brands have this problem and there are suggestions on Internet on how to mechanically adjust bows to improve their sensitivity.
